European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism will participate in the Opening Ceremony on September 14, 2006
Jān Figel', the present European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism, will address the audience at the opening ceremony regarding the role the European Commission can take in developing a transcultural approach of higher education.
Jān Figel' was born in Slovakia in 1960. He trained as an engineer in power electronics, but rapidly took responsibilites in the political life of his country: He was elected to the Slovak National Council in 1990.
In the late nineties, as State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was active in the accession negotiations of his country with the European Union, and later in the drafting of the European Constitution.
The dominant theme of his portfolio is Knowledge, Citizenship and Quality of Life, a theme which requires a multidisciplinary approach embedded both in the natural-technical as well as in the human-social sciences. He also wants to promote adequate and future oriented education for the 60 million youth of Europe.
After his presentation at the opening ceremony, which will follow the address of the Minister of Home Affairs from Switzerland, Pascal Couchepin, the two personalities will meet in Crans-Montana for bilateral talks.
Professor Dame Julia Higgins to moderate the first Symposium of the World Knowledge Dialogue
Prof. Dame Julia Higgins has accepted to be the moderator and Scientist in Residence of the Symposium in Crans- Montana September 14 to 16, 2006. She will be assisted by a group of 3-4 young scientists-participants at the meeting, who will help her to gather the necessary information for the final presentation. She will moderate the discussions on Thursday and Friday and comment on the summaries of the workshops on Saturday.
Professor Dame Julia Higgins is Professor of Polymer Science at Imperial College, Foreign Secretary and Vice President of the Royal Society. Besides running a strong research program on the molecular basis of properties in polymeric materials, she has shown a strong interest in the participation of women in science, engineering and technology, she oversees the Royal Society international relations program. She also has expressed interest on many occasions in a broader approach to science...the main objective of the World Knowledge Dialogue.
We are delighted to have her lead the discussions in Crans-Montana, which she will do with her outstanding intelligence, her sharp perception of the problems inherent to the progress of science and her vision of a new paradigm of knowledge encompassing both the natural-technical sciences as well as the humanities-social sciences.
A rehearsal, with Edward O. Wilson and Gerald Holton, occurred at the Swiss House for Advanced Research and Education (SHARE) in Boston last April
EO Wilson and Gerald Holton discussed the growing divide between the natural sciences and the human/social sciences and the initiatives and challenges to bridge this divide. The discussion initiated the World Knowledge Dialogue, a global initiative to overcome the gap between the sciences and the humanities.
