Akimasa Sumi
Biographical Information
Akimasa Sumi is Professor and Executive Director, Transdisciplinary Initiative for Global
Sustainability (TIGS), Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S),
University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. Prof. Akimasa Sumi received the Ba.D. and M.S. in
physics and a PhD in meteorology from the University of Tokyo in 1971, 1973, and 1985
respectively. In 1973, he joined the Japan Meteorological Agency and became involved in
developing the fledgling science of numerical weather prediction. From 1979 to 1981 he
studied the Asian monsoon at the Department of Meteorology of the University of Hawaii.
In 1985 he joined the Geophysical Institute of the University of Tokyo, and became a
collaborator on the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) program, which is
dedicated to research on El Nino and seasonal predictions. He has been a Professor at the
Center for Climate System Research (CCSR) at the University of Tokyo since 1991, where
he has been engaged in developing a climate model and conducting research on climate
dynamics including global warming issues. Between 1994 and 2004 he was director of the
CCSR. In 2006 he joined a new project as its executive director. “The Transdisciplinary
Initiative for Global Sustainability” (TIGS), has as its mission, to pursue the coordination
of disciplines towards attainment of a sustainable society. More information about this
