New Initiatives of the University of Tokyo Toward Establishing a Strategy for Sustainability Through Knowledge Structuring and a Transdisciplinary Approach

A new program for establishing a sustainability science has been launched at the University of Tokyo. It consists of two initiatives, the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S) and the Transdisciplinary Initiative for Global Sustainability (TIGS). The former is a network of universities and research organizations in Japan and the latter is a center for organizing and coordinating various disciplines at the University of Tokyo. The operating principles of these activities are an issue-driven approach and a transdisciplinary approach through knowledge structuring. Sustainability education is also a priority, with plans to establish a new curriculum and a network system of education.
