André Hurst
Biographical Information
André Hurst is Emeritus Rector, University of Geneva, Switzerland, and President of the
WKD Foundation. André Hurst studied at the University of Geneva and obtained a doctorate
in literature in 1967. He has been a full professor at the University of Geneva since 1983
and is a renowned authority on the language, literature, music and civilization of ancient
greece. Most notably Professor Hurst was involved in many years of effort to reconstruct,decipher and translate (in the full sense of the term) poetic manuscripts transcribed in
the fourth century BC and that shed new light on a thousand years of earlier civilization.
Between 1986 and 1992 Professor Hurst was Dean of the Faculté des Lettres at Geneva and
between 2003 and 2006 held the post of Rector of the University. He has been a visiting
professor at the Universities of Montreal, Lausanne, Cluj (Romania), and at the ENS (Ecole
Normale Supérieure) in Paris. He also spent periods of study in Rome, becoming a member
of the Swiss Institute of Rome, and in Munich, as a recipient of the Deutscher Akademischer
Austauschdienst (DAAD). Professor Hurst is a past president of the “Fondation du Conservatoire
de musique de Genève” the “Société académique de Genève”, and the “Groupe
romand des études grecques et latines”. He is a member of the International Association of
Papyrologists, and serves on the scientific committee of the journal GAIA (Grenoble) an
interdisciplinary academic forum for the study of all aspects of ancient greek, In 1991 Professor
Hurst received an Honorary Doctorate from Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj (1991)
and was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Merit of de Romania. |
