Markus B. Karner
Biographical Information

Markus B. Karner, MSc PhD, is at the Singapore Management University, Singapore. Markus Karner is an ecologist and business professional. He is interested in extending biological models from evolution, ecology, complex systems and organic development to the business world. He has developed a course on biological models for business which he teaches at Singapore Management University (SMU) and also heads Karner Consult Pte Ltd, an independent think tank with an approach largely motivated by discussions with colleagues and associates from the SMU. Prior to his consulting venture Dr Karner did research in marine microbial ecology. After obtaining his Ph.D in 1995 from the Observatoire Océanologique, Villefranche-sur-mer and the University of Paris VI, France, he carried out research at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles and the University of Hawaii. His work on applying molecular biology methods to detect and assess the activity of bacterial species in the world’s oceans has been published in major specialist journals, and the journal ‘Nature’. He received the U.S. National Science Foundation Medal for Services in Antarctica. Since 2001 Dr Karner, a native of Austria, lives with his family in Singapore.
