Jean Starobinski, 1920, MD, worked as an assistant in the departments of internal medicine and psychiatry at the University Hospitals of Geneva (1948-1954) and Lausanne (1957-1958). He simultaneously pursued a career as a historian which enabled him to teach French Literature, History of Ideas and History of Medicine at the three following universities: Johns Hopkins (1953-1956), Geneva (1958-1985), Basel (1959-1961), as well as in France (1987-1988). He took a great interest in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's work (La transparence et l'obstacle, 1958), as well as in other writers and artists of the eighteenth century. He has also carried out research on the semantic history of certain key words of scientific vocabulary (Action et Réaction, 1999). Some of his work has been devoted to the methodology of criticism and human sciences. He was awarded the Balzan prize for literary criticism in 1984. His novels have been translated into about fifteen languages.
