After studies in social work and economics, Dreifuss worked as a civil servant in the field of development cooperation and as a leader of the Swiss Labor Union. Member of the Social democrat Party of Switzerland, she was elected by the Parliament one of the seven members of the Swiss Government (the so called Federal Council). From early 1993 to the end of 2002, she acted as Minister of domestic affairs, including public health, research, higher education, social security and other political fields. During the year 1998, she became the vice chair of the Federal Council and she was during 1999 the President of the Swiss Confederation.
